Great job on the manway, John.
Love the music. Unbelievable ascent time.
yeah, there's something about getting back in those old manways and offtrail routes that tends to kick up your hiking intensity.
A video I was glad to see - thanks - I am envious you could do this in such a short period of time - super fit.
Whoa!
John, I was just kidding about going down. I know going down any mountain (Cat Stairs, etc.) is hard.
Mike,
Going down is more dangerous than the ascent, as is the case in most mountaineering adventures. When Joey and I dropped back from the Sawteeth, the sun had departed leaving us to stair step the creek bed which was slicker than the valdez spill. That video is two years old, when we were there last in October, the trail was a little more overgrown.
we did that route right at the end of the fall color season. i thought the entire route was rather open and easy to follow sight wise, up until it started to get steep. from that point we chose a route that turned out to be just a bit to the east of the actual manway. we discovered that as we descended back down a series of tight narrow switchbacks that John had talked about on our way up. where we got off route was right at the bottom of those.
and for my tastes, it was much more fun to go up than down, though it was a great technical challenge in both directions.
Nice video of the manway. Looks like someone has been doing some clearing of the trail. I rather go down it, then up, lol.
